The "half" North Face Ultra Trail
wow - my last post was in Febuary??? I can't believe it! So much has happened. Most imoportant is that my daughter Lucy was born on July 11 - of course the sweetest baby in the world!
The Vasaloeppet was real good fun - a wonderful tour through the countryside and not as painful than I thought. Mind you I did need 8:20 hrs for the trip, but it was worth it. Should in fact have gone even slower to relish the landscape!! That's what Rudi (WEhn) my mate from work will do next time. He said he WON'T be pleased if he completes the Vasaloeppet in UNDER ten hrs. Good thinking. You pay load of starting fee, it takes you ages to get up half Sweden and then you try to get the race over with as quick as possible - stupid! :-)
Or is it?
Well on August 28 2008 I flew to Chamonix for the North Face Ultra Trail Mont Blanc, the UTMB. A race covering 165kms 9500m positive elevation (and negative as well!) in max 46hrs.
A week before I was completely knackered. I could hardly climd the stairs without feeling my legs buckling.
The doctors diagnose was overtraining! Not really because of too much training, but too one sided training! Never ever had that in 30 years sports!
Actually I had too few kms in my legs - only covering between 40 - 70 mainly flat kms a week. There were all with backpack, I had a long run with 45kms inbetween but what i neglected - and that where the overtraining came from - cycling, Squash, Gym. So i was stale a week before the event.
So I stopped running completely for the rest of the week until the race started on Friday 29th at 18:30.
An actually I didn't fold completely but I must say I never competed in a race and thought so much about how hard it was as in this one.
Eventhough time still passes. I remember contemplating at around 22 pm what I had been doing the day before and two days before and that in 2 hours time I could It would be like 4 hours passed on thinking backwards because I'm two hours closer to the finish line. Does that make sense?...
Well anyway - the next I can remember is that it's around 3am.
But it got harder and harder and my aim was to beat the time cut for as long as possible becuse, really, going for this race with my amount of preperation was just a little cocky.
I was still 2hrs ahead of the deadline by 6am but then I started to really hurt on the downhill parts. Just couldn't run them any more. And that's where your time goes. So by 12 noon I was still 30min ahead of the cut off time with my back against the wall.
And - to cut a long story short I reached a place called Arnuva after 94kms, 5400m pos elevation and 24hrs and 36 mins. Also, it was 36mins too much and the frenchies grabbed my racenumber, cut off an edge and showed me the way to the bus for my return to Chamonix!
I'm still not sure how relieved I was - but it definately was the right deciscion. My legs were completly gone, my feet though, were great. Not a sinlge blister! And hey - I did manage half the run, covered a new record distance of 94kms, ran longer than ever before - what more can I expect after such a pityful preperation? :-)
So whoever wants to finish this really gruelling run: you need to train running downhill!!!!!
Going Uphill means strong legs and you usually power walk, but it's downhill where you simply can't afford to walk. You have to run to cover the distance.
My next run, the Roentgenlauf in Remscheind on Oct 26 will provide me with my final qualification point to attemped the UTMB next year!!!
Oh by the way: Fantastic organisation, food was at the check points plenty, and the scenry, the mountains, the valleys, the Mont Blanc... a b s o l u t e l y stunning!!! Worth every penny of the 140,- or so entry fee.

No snow for the eskimo?

Good evening all!
a quick check in the weather sites shows around 1 °C Salen. That's the town where the Vasaloppet starts. But on the satellite pics you can see some snow there!, well, a bit at least.
My thumb started to hurt after the practice in Erzgebirge and hasn't really gotten any better. Since I didn't get an appointment with the doctor I just built myself a cast. It's made out of this stuff on the picture: "Powerknete" by Pattex. it says it mends anything so let's wait and see...
I'm actually waiting for it to dry right now - aaaaand...presto! I just made a picture of my "thumbcast" and uploaded it for you to see!
I want to be able to take it off until the race and then tape it on nice and tight all up to the wrist...what do you think?
Good night!

Trainingstour cross country skiing
the weekend before last Rudi and I decided to drive down to the Erzgebirge (380km southeast of Berlin) to do some training. Or rather I hoped that Rudi would show me the basics of cross country skiing. We set off at 6:00 a.m., and did some 35kms during the day. The weather was awful and now I know the real advantage of having wax skis (instead of no-wax ski) - you always have a great excuse! The weather changed and wasn't right for the type of wax you'd applied!!! That's the whole trick! What a clever idea - built in excuses.
But what happend afterwards is where we don't have excuses left... stopped at ARAL where they don't sell Diesel fuel, but Ultimate Diesel or Super Diesel. Spiffing. No 2 was cheaper so Rudi grabbed the super nozzle, not realizing, that it actually was the Super petrol and by the time he'd noticed there were already 15 litres in the tank!
In the end the car was towed to a garage 45min away, we had to hire a car to get back to Berlin. Then on Monday we drove the 380km back to pick up the fixed car! What an adventure! Do not try this at home!
Well I fell about 30 times but Rudi showed me the main moves (I hope) and due to lack of snow all over the place my next skiing tour will be the actual Vasaloeppet! Oh no!
That's for now - time for Bed.
Oh I started to jot my running training down into an online Training-log. I'm still filling two, as I'm not yet sure which one I prefer. One is www.trainingstagebuch.org and the other is www.lauftagebuch.eu.
Good night!

Vasaloppet 2008
long time no postings! But I am still alive. It took a while to recover from the Marathon des Sables, especially as my Dad urged me to run the Paderborner Half Marathon just 5 days later - thank you very much. Had a beer at km mark 18 and finished in 1:35:27.
After that I was completly drained. Tried to jog 4 (four) kms a week later - didn't make it!
But then everything healed well and by mid june I was able to ride the Alb Extrem roadbikemarathon, 255km in the swabian hills. Two weeks after that I joind a group of riders to Denmark for also a roadbikemarathon. 304km this time. My average was 29 km/h which pleased me very much. Also in Denmark were Rudi Wehn, Wolfgang Nagel, Bernward Rechel and Dieter Nickel. The whole trip was loads of fun. Unfortuntely Rudi had a bad day. First flat tyre after 5km. Second flat after 30km (we had checked the inner AND outer tube!) and after 45km he crashed into a guy in front of him. But as this guy had crashed half a second before into his leading bike, Rudi had the chance of a snowball in hell - so he went over the handlebars and crashed his beloved styrkeproven helmet along with his collarbone.
The Squashseason started in October, I signed up for 2. Bundesleague Team Paderborn. At the moment we're in spot 4 in the league which is ... ok.
And the Rudi had this gran idea of entering the Vasaloppet. And I was made to go as well. Just great. I've just about never skied in my life - let alone Cross country skiing - which the Vasaloppet is. So this weekend were off for a practise "run" in the Harz. As a wise man once said: If you want to try cross country skiing - start with a small country. Ok.
Bye for now!

Back from the Marathon des Sables and still alive!
Good evening all!
On Monday evening I returned safely, happy, healthy and very exhausted from Morocco!
First of all I would like to thank everyone who donated to FACING AFRICA to help fight the terrible disease called NOMA and as far as I can see, donations are still coming in, wow!
In the desert it was a great joy and motivation to receive your emails with all your encouraging and inspiring words. Every afternoon around 5 p.m. the postwoman came around with a bunch of emails – how little do you need to happy! Knowing that there are people who care for you!
Also many thanks again to my ever active little sister Tanya who kept my homepage and you updated on my daily progress. And progress was mighty tough out there I can tell you that!!
Secretly I was aiming for an average of maybe 7km/h but after the first 30km were completed everybodys hopes were crushed into the sand and humbly we all returned to the main goal of managing to complete this hardest desert run on earth.
Oh of course, the Moroccans and others who are used to this climate do have advantages but that’s just one of the difficulties the average westerner had to face: Not only manage your water, food and equipment, but manage the weather, the sand, the stones. Whatever your preparation it’s nearly impossible to avoid blisters. Somewhere your body or you feet will start to hurt after a while. Then you automatically avoid that pain and you shift your weight. What happens then? That part of the body hurts next, you shift again until you get the first of many blisters. And the game continues on the next level… J
But we all knew this beforehand, so we bravely took it on, a usual question at the doc trotters clinic was: Hey doc, are my 8 blisters on one foot an MdS record? J
Or: I’ve just cut away the third layer of skin doc, when do I reach the bone? J
But seriously: It was far tougher than I had thought. I ran (hobbled, stumbled, plodded, totted) whenever I could, the rest of the time I walked. Luckily I never quite came close enough to the ground to actually crawl, but at times I wasn’t far from it…
There were 7 of us in an open tent at night time it was freezing cold in daytime temperatures rose to 43 degrees, but there always was a nice sandy breeze, so you never really felt the heat…
Water supply was sufficient, I had 2600 kcals per day but I didn’t eat it all. Neither did the others, in fact after the second day we were starting to get fed up with the energy bars, so we opened up a bar bazaar. Everybody chucked their surplus stuff in the middle of the tent and whoever wanted anything could just take it.

My kit!
Last Day at Work!
Last weekend was a squash disaster. Our team lost both matches and I also lost both my matches :-( The first wasn't too bad. I had to play a guy called Aqueel Rehman who is 130 in the world. I lost 1:3. On sunday I played a mate of mine I've known for over 20 years. Were pretty even squashwise but on sunday he just crushed me. Bastard. ;-) Watch out Andy - next time it's my turn again!! :-)
Last preperations are underway: Alex Vero (www.veroproductions.co.uk) gave me further advice for the run. He also mentioned that I should take more food. I now have a "joker" bag with additional 3000kcal.
What's been worrying me is the dangerous stuff on the flights. For EU flights you are NOT allowed to have a lighter in your hold luggage. It must be on your body. If it is found in your hold luggage it will be disposed of. the same applies to "Esbit" material - that's the sturff to get your campfire going. If you're lucky, the X-Ray won't detect it, but I don't want to count on that. So, a lighter in my pocket, but probably no ESBIT. :-(
Easy 9km jog and a few weights and solarium yesterday, today easy jog (the race itself only starts on sunday!) and tomorrow: holiday! Time to practise packing my backpack etc!!!

Letzter Arbeitstag!
Genug Erholungszeit also!
:-)
Bis dann dann

Tapering?
It's 6:58 in the morning and eventhough I'm at the airport, I'm not yet leaving for morocco, but for Nürtingen. Another 2. Bundesleague match today and one tomorrow.
Thanks to my Dad I now have Power Bar Foods galore. Some will come with me to the MdS, some I have in my bag for Squash!
Tanya, my clever Sister had a nice little Idea on the donation page - unfortunately I'd didn't quite work out. The Amount at the time was 1392,82 pounds. She then donated exactly 20,18 to bring the sum to 1413 pounds. Does that ring a bell? No? Well, look at the number closely: 1 (meaning myself) and 413, which is my runners number! At the same time though Katja donated - for which I say thank you, Katja! and the mark was heaved right up. By now also Katharina donated. Thanks to you too!
I'm still trying to get in touch with Simon Frenz who donated a few weeks ago, but nobody seems to have his email address! If anyone has it, please forward it to me! Simon was (and still is) one of the top german Squash players and has played for Germany many times.
As for the title: I should be tapering down by now, but as I never hat the massive milage runs I just stick to my plodding along. Thursday was 17km, wednesday 9kms plus gym, tuesday 18km. All nice and easy, just enjoying running. Friday: nothing except eat! :-)
Well, I'm off to catch my plane!

Franz Feckl Cup

Good evening all!
ONLY 9 DAYS LEFT!
last weekend our traditional annual Squash and food event took place for the fifth time: The Franz Feckl Cup! This is an invitation tournament for more or less the same seven players every year. We come together from wherever we are... the only excuse for not turning up is, well, death.
The Squash matches are held in Pink Power Squash Club in Böblingen (near Stuttgart). Afterwards we all go to Franz Feckls Landhouse. Franz, the host and Patrone of this event belongs to Germanys top chefs. See www.landhausfeckl.de for details. Or even better, go see for yourself - it's a real experience!
Anyway, we go to Franz's place, watch Bayern München play and then it's off into the enourmus kitchen where Franz and his chef (who is also called Franz! - how german can you get???) cook schnitzel and chips for the kids and Zwiebelrostbraten for everybody else. Salads is for starters and then a surprise dessert. Great wine, tasty bread with butter - pure heaven! As the restaurant is closed sundays, it's a kind of kitchen party but also we have a long table decorated by Franz's wife Manuela. Of course there are speeches and the date for 2008 is set: The last weekend of January.
Training today: 35min in the morning, 1:40 in the afternoon of easy jogging with light backpack.
And I am pleased to announce still more donations from:
- Christoph Degmair, a collegue from Berlin Airports
- Katy and Floh, who just moved to Bangkok where I surly will visit them!!
- Nadine Albeck, good Squash playeress and a good sport
- Carolin Gneiting, a very good friend and one of the worlds leading "stand up bullshit talkers" :-)
To see the donationlist, visit:

Good night all!

Franz Feckl Cup!

Medical Certificate

Hi all!
the days have been filled with the normal training and I'm still more than happy to report no injuries! :-) We also played two 2. Bundesleague matches. One against Augsburg and the other against Beindersheim. They both ended 2:2. I won one of my matches but lost the other one against Anders Kroscky who played out of his mind.
The knee is giving the odd twich here and there, but since I know where it's from I neglect it.
I went to pick up my electrocardiogram. My resting heart rate is 38, so that is at least one indication that I have been training! :-)
Also, I bought a pair of slippers (see pic) for the evenings. 2,95 euros, so they probably won't last past the run. Beautiful white ones and only 110grams! :-)
What else... ah, a picture of my food - so colourful isn't it? Reminds me of fresh fruit...
Just over 2 weeks left until we fly to Morocco!!!!!
Good night!
Christian
Medical Certificate
Erinnert mich frappierend an frisches Obst... :-)
Nur noch gut 2 Wochen bis zum Abflug!!!
Gute Nacht!

Berlin Hash Run

Good evening all!
just arrived back home from a great run with the Berlin Hash House Harriers. Check their website on: www.berlin-h3.de or visit my webhost sponsor on www.hamburghash.de for details on hashing
For those who have never heard about hashing -it was founded in the late thirties in a "hash house" in Malaysia (a hash house is place where you get cheap food and has nothing to do with hashish). It's a kind of Hounds and Hares, with a lot of fun and some drinks and sing along songs. If you're a regular harrier (australian word for runner) you get your own Hash name. The others choose it for you so usually it's something you're not awfully happy about. Mine is quite ok actually, it's "Astroglide". On the Picture you can see my christening performed with beer and flour...
So basically I was out and about for 3:30 running, walking, drinking. I'm telling you, running with a backpack and some beers is not easy at all!!!
Now it's bedtime!
Good night!
Berlin Hash Run
So, Bettzeit.
Gute Nacht!

Gaiter stapling

Good evening all!
the last days have been spent with training - alone most of the times, a quicker paced 1:30 run with Silke, the triathlete and a Squashmatch today against one of the top players in Berlin, Felix Unger. We're just about the same standard and once again the match ended 3:2. This in my favour.
He're now are some pictures of my gaiters and if you look closely, you can see that I attached the velcro to my shoe by stapling them on with 1.3 cm long tacks...
Good night all!

Gamaschen tackern
Guten Abend allerseits!
Gute Nacht!

Geocache Found!
after Mathias told me how to deal with wild boars I fearlessly returned to search the Grunewald cache. Readers may remember that I wasn't able to find it last time. All in all it was a 3:07 run with walking parts in between. I still feel some flu inside me - need to see the doctor next week. Don't want to take any chances. But anyway: This time I found the cache, hooray! It was a plastic tupper-like box in a red bag hidden under twigs behind a fallen tree. I put my name into the little book that is kept as a log inside the box. I wasn't far off last time either!
Good night!

Geocache Schatz gefunden!!
Guten Abend allerseits,
Will kein Risiko eingehen.
So - Schlafenszeit.
Gute Nacht!

Desert hat!

Good evening all!
well, on the weekend I was in Nürtingen. We had our second division Squash league match against Karsruhe.
I arrived saturday morning by plane and since I had to do some training I had decided to run to the club from the airport.
Had my big backpack with me - one you normally use for hiking (80 litres) It was11kgs and so I changed into my running kit on the toilet at the airport and "took off". As I more of "jog- trotted" to Nürtingen many surprised dirvers in their cars turned in disbelief :-) Well it's 14km and I managed it in 1:30h. After that into the sauna, streching and 3 hours later I played my match and won 3:0, hooray! :-)
On Sunday we played Karsruhe again, as this weekend was the turning weekend in the season. From now on we play all the teams the second time. And yippie, again I won my match. In the end though, it was an overall score 2:2 on both days.

I was thinking about proper headware.... All these desert caps seemed a little boring, so presto! Here on the pic is my hat for the Marathon des Sables 2007! I hope I won't be mistaken for an oasis by a wild camel who'll chew up my hat!...
Good night!

Wüstenhut!
Am Wochende war wieder Spieltag 2. Bundesliga Squash in Nürtingen gegen Karlsruhe. Es ging also zweimal gegen Karlsruhe.

Gute Nacht!

Wow, the MdS is NEXT MONTH!
how's the training getting along you're wondering? Answer: Very little running, more Fitness studio: Core and shoulders.
I went to a physio and she checked my knee and just about everything else...
Apart from that my hip is partly stiff, one leg is shorter, legs are bent and one million other things I guess I'm proud to be able to stand upright! :-)
But seriously - everybody has these problems, so what did I take with me from the visit?
I decided my knee isn't inflamed but that it's a twitchy nerve coming from the lower back (probably near the sciatica (?)). That means nice and steady streching and yesterdays 10km jog was great - hardly any pain! :-) Okay I AM testing my body on ibuprofene - seeing how much it can take, and they're kinda painkillers - but hey - I'm back on the road!! :-)
Many thanks to the following friends and supporters for their contribution towards FACING AFRICA!!

Good night all!
Christian
Wunderbar! Na gut, ich teste grade wie mein Körper Ibuprofen verträgt (besser jetzt testen als später in der Wüste Bauchweh...) und die sollen ja auch schmerzlindernd sein... wie dem auch sei - ich bin back on the road!
Auf der Spendenseite weiter Erfreuliches:

Anke Molkenthin in Berlin!!
Wow, I was really looking forward to last wednesday! Finally I would be meeting not only Andreas Dorst who will also participate in the MdS 2007 but also the famous Anke Molkenthin. Anke has already participated 12 (twelve!) times in the MdS and usually is in the top 3 of the female finishers, wow!
She showed us loads of pictures, explained exactly how we'd spend the day and gave us valuable advice on all sorts of questions that we threw at her.
She's seems a very relaxed person and she advised us strongly not to look for personal bests and not to fight the desert. The way to suceed is to enjoy the experience, live every single moment of the desert, rest if you need and take care of your feet.
There was a lot more and I must say I can hardly wait to get going! Well - actually I'm already in full flow - been training for weeks, haven't I? :-D
Cheers!
Christian
Anke Molkenthin in Berlin!!
Dann würde man unweigerlich verlieren.
Gute Nacht!
